«pilatus» – Beginning of a new decade
«Success through Innovation» - the maxim for «gotthard». It is a reflection of the most important principle in the first ten years of the AMZ’s success story. The courage to take the untrodden path brought the team a rollercoaster of emotions: harsh setbacks and huge progress, defeat and victory - everything that defines a year in Formula Student. The effort paid off: in a turbulent season «gotthard» made a convincing mark against the strongest-ever competition. A racecar worthy of marking the end of the first decade of AMZ is entering well-deserved retirement.
The new Team
After this turbulent season of racing, «gotthard» can retire to its well-deserved rest and free up the workshop for its successor. A new team has formed to design a racecar for the 2016/2017 season of Formula Student Electric. The team comprises twelve students from the ETH Zurich and six students from the School of Applied Sciences in Lucerne. Thirteen of them are mechanical engineers while the remaining five are electrical engineers. Together with the project management they form the core team which is supported by a great number of freelancers and alumni.
Basecamp and Teambuilding
Shortly after beginning the project, the engineers took part in the so-called “base camp” - a week of intense brainstorming for new ideas. It began with an analysis of previous racecars to identify their strengths and weaknesses. It quickly became apparent that the new team has plenty of ideas. Hence lots of new concepts arose with great potential for innovation, reliability and lightweight design. After brainstorming, the feasibility of these concepts was evaluated and their on-track potential was assessed. In this phase teamwork is all-important as every concept has an influence on multiple parts of the car.
It is time to look ahead, to the beginning of a new era. Since mid-September a new AMZ team is developing the racecar for the 2016/17 season of Formula Student. The ambitious engineers are building on a foundation of ten years of experience and are aiming for the very top of the Formula Student Electric world ranking.
