About the car
«grimsel» with a total weight of only 168kg is he lightest vehicle in the history of AMZ and combines proven concepts with radical, new technologies. For example adaptive spring damper elements were implemented, as well as a drag reduction system. «grimsel» is powered by four AMZ M4 wheel hub motors. The in house developed synchronous motors produce 37kW each at a weight of 3.4kg. The planetary gearbox which is integrated into the upright transmits the torque to accumulated 1630Nm at the wheels. Using traction control and torque vectoring the torque is individually controlled, increasing the agility of the vehicle. The chassis, a one piece carbon fibre monocoque was manufactured by the team itself. By the efficient design of the layup a torsional stiffness of 4500Nm/deg could be achieved at a weight of only 18.3kg (including the roll hoops). The aerodynamics package produces enough downforce to drive at the ceiling at 110km/h. In the suspension new 7.5” wide tyres and one piece carbon fibre rims are used. The pushrod geometry on the front and rear axle clears space for the wheel hub motors. With three overall wins and an average of 920 points «grimsel» is AMZ’s most successful car. Furthermore with its victories in Austria and Spain it was able to achieve the two highest scores in the European history of Formula Student.
