About the car
eiger was designed to be one of the most daring leaps in AMZ’s history of innovation, introducing several new concepts with the goal of defending the first place in the world rankings. Building upon the successes of its predecessor, the concept of a dual-accumulator, four-wheel drive race car with a hydraulic suspension system was taken to the next level: For the first time in AMZ’s history, the inverters were developed completely in-house, thus making all parts of eiger’s drivetrain custom engineered for maximum performance. Each inverter controls one of the four M8 wheelhub mounted motors using a self-developed direct torque control modulator recalculating motor state and switching positions every 10 nanoseconds. Custom silicon-carbide modules allow for increased power efficiency in applying up to 390 Nm of torque at each wheel through a staged planetary gearbox. A newly developed SLM-manufactured aluminum upright allows for integration of motor and gearbox housing, cooling jacket and suspension pickup points into one stiff, lightweight topology optimized part. Self-developed CFRP rims decrease unsuspended rotating mass whilst providing superior stiffness. A hydraulically actuated active suspension system controlled by ballistically boosted digital valves enables situation-specific control of the car’s roll, pitch and ride-height. In conjunction with the suspension kinematics, this allows for live adjustment of wheel camber. Furthermore, warp displacements are decoupled to reduce tire load variations. The wind-tunnel validated aerodynamics package further increases eiger’s cornering performance. The chassis-integrated Y-diffuser maximizes the produced downforce at minimal drag, whilst tire wake control devices and nosewings ensure the optimal performance of downstream aerodynamic devices. The countless efforts spent solving technical challenges were rewarded with overall victories in the Netherlands and Germany. By going undefeated in Engineering Design and achieving first place in the world rankings, eiger proved to be the most advanced of its kind.
